Peter Frampton recalled how he started using the famous “talk box” effect, noting that, unlike the ubiquitous autotune of today’s world, it was fully analog.
The effect that was made famous in the electric guitar world by the 73-year-old British player wasn’t his personal invention, as similar things existed before the release of Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like We Do” and “Show Me the Way.” In essence, it is a piece of equipment that combines speech with an electric instrument signal by using a plastic pipe that connects with the musician’s mouth. The musician is then able to articulate various sound effects by simply changing the shape of their mouth.
